Opened in 2021, Hoea! is an artist-run gallery and creative space curated by wāhine Māori, Melanie Tangaere Baldwin (Ngāti Porou, Rongomaiwahine) and Nikora Te Kahu (Ngāi Tamaterangi, Ngāti Makoro, Ngā Puhi, Ngāi Tuhoe). Michelle Kerr (Te Aitanga a Hauiti) is the kairaranga at HOEA!, Carmel Salmanzadeh (Te Aitanga a Hauiti, Samoa, Iran, China), is the teina in residence.
The name, Hoea!, literally means ‘to paddle’ but its implication is about ‘dynamism’ and forward movement. The intent is to provide a space that contributes to the national conversation about contemporary Toi Māori and to champion all forms of indigenous contemporary practice. HOEA! is a creative space that runs a number of workshops, classes and public programmes.
From June 3 – July 30 2022, HOEA! is exhibiting ‘Pūmanawa’. Pūmanawa is an exploration and celebration of whakapapa. The artists contributing to Pūmanawa are:
- Steve Gibbs
- Christopher Huriwai
- Georgina Watson
- Piupiu-Maya Turei
- Skawenatti
An opening preview of Pūmanawa will be held at HOEA! on June 3 at 6pm.
