Erena Koopu
Ngāti Awa, Te Whānau a Apanui
About the Artist
I was born green eyed with blonde hair, and never thought my appearance really matched the language that I spoke or the way I felt. I’m a product of Reo Måori movements and became part of the revival of a language and the strengthening of a culture from a young age. Genetically rich from my Māori and Pākehā whakapapa I had no choice that someday I would be a creative. I love to make a mess with paint and I’m equally passionate about Māori performing arts, these are my preferred mediums however I strive on fear and excitement and truly believe this is where magic lives-so anything is possible. I have grown and now truly believe and feel that my appearance is the perfect match to my voice and the visual languages I speak.
Te Ara i Whiti
Ngā Kaupoi, 2024
This artwork is a poignant homage to Ngā Kaupoi o Te Tairāwhiti and the brave soldiers who fought in pakanga across the world. It intertwines between the permanent pou whakairo adding a contemporary element, thus creating a bridge between past and present. This work symbolises the connection and continuity of bravery across generations enduring the spirit and sacrifice of these heroes. The words ‘Ake Ake’ are inspired by the battalions rallying cry-waiata ‘Māori Battalion March to Victory’. Through this artwork, we honour their legacy and ensure their stories remain etched in our collective memory.
You can find “Ngā Kaupoi” at Te Ara i whiti from October 4 – October 13, 2024 at Kelvin and Marina Park.
