A recognition of creative genius.
Tū te Whaihanga is an exhibition of sacred taonga that left the shores of Te Tairāwhiti 251 years ago on board the HMS Endeavour after its first voyage to Aotearoa in October 1769.
The return of these taonga from museums in Europe is the result of the determination by Tairāwhiti Iwi for the taonga to return to reconnect with their descendants, to reclaim the knowledge they hold, and to sustain their legacy. These taonga can only be seen in Tairāwhiti.
