Music for Intimate Spaces

Step away from the recital hall and towards the more intimate spaces of our place.

Curated by Mere Boynton in partnership with Tairāwhiti Museum, Music for Intimate Spaces is a situational musical installation. Move through spaces at your own leisure and enjoy the sounds and music of place and time as musicians enliven the C Company Memorial House, Wyllie Cottage and the SS Star of Canada.

Partnering with Tairāwhiti Museum, and proudly supported by Professor Jack Richards.

COMPANY HOUSE
SUN 13 OCT | 2PM - 2:50PM

Join Chaitanya Temepara and Norm Heke for a magical performance that fuses the traditional sounds of taonga pūoro with the modern sounds of classical guitar into an ambient soundscape that reflects the beauty of the natural world from the moana (sea) to the ngāhere (forest).

WYLLIE COTTAGE
SUN 13 OCT | 2:40PM - 3:30PM

Olinka Matete and Moeau Stewart are uri (descendents) of Rongowhakaata both studying at Waikato University. They will pay tribute to the mana and resilience of their tipuna wāhine Keita (Kate) Wyllie who built Wyllie Cottage with beautiful waiata i roto i te reo Māori.

SS STAR OF CANADA
SUN 13 OCT | 3:10PM - 4PM

Brass Az play a variety of brass quartet music, including some old favourites, some traditional, and some hymn tunes. There is no sound quite like a brass ensemble, so come down to the SS Star of Canada and enjoy the ambience that this beautiful and soulful sound invokes.

C COMPANY HOUSE
SUN 20 OCT | 2PM - 2:50PM

Black Pearl are manu tioriori Ora Taukamo Pohio and Jasmine Taare accompanied by Waata Taukamo on guitar. They will warm the C Company whare with a performance dedicated to the memory of those sons, brothers, fathers and grandfathers whose lives and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

WYLLIE COTTAGE
SUN 20 OCT | 2:40PM - 3:30PM

The Solis String Quartet are local musicians with many years of combined experience. They will fill Wyllie Cottage with music from the baroque, classical and romantic era, evoking the history and memories still held within the cottage walls.

SS STAR OF CANADA
SUN 20 OCT | 3:10PM - 4PM

Madly Irie are a bunch of irrepressible women who love to play swing and ragtime. Members Tanya Mitcalfe, Esther Hudson, Rob Woods and Keren Rickard will be joined by Scott Casley on percussion.
