Artist Erena Koopu responds to Ngā Mata o te Ariki Tāwhirimātea – Maisey Rika’s latest album which celebrates Matariki.
Erena Koopu is a painter and Māori performing artist whose works are influenced by Te Ao Māori with a focus on retelling iwi narratives.
For the last few years, Erena has been inspired to paint lyrical musings by Māori composers who tell iwi, hapū and whānau narratives.
This time, in collaboration with Maisey Rika, whom Erena considers the queen of Māori music, she will create a piece of work inspired by each song on Maisey’s latest album Ngā Mata o te Ariki Tāwhirimātea. Each song and piece is based on Matariki and all its beauty.
